Microdosing Magic Mushrooms: the Health Benefits of Psilocybin Mushrooms in Microdoses

Whether it’s an artist struggling with creative blocks, an athlete wanting to upgrade performance and technique, or just someone seeking natural alternatives for alleviating symptoms of depression, more and more people are turning to the emerging field of study that is microdosing psilocybin mushrooms. Psilocybin mushrooms, commonly and aptly referred to as “magic mushrooms” are an organic naturally growing mushroom that is psychoactive when consumed in large quantities. Similar to marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms are generally considered a drug and are mostly illegal in the United States. However, research and scientific studies are now showing that mushrooms may have profound medicinal applications.

Why Microdose with Psilocybin Mushrooms (versus Taking a Full Dose)

Taking regular large doses of psychedelic mushrooms might not be a feasible long term plan for most people. I mean, who has time to set aside multiple days in a row to have soul illuminating realizations about reality and the cosmos, let alone one day?  (Well, actually… a lot of people, as it turns out.) However… if you are in the category of people who happen to work a regular job, have a family structure to up hold, or engage in any other number of activities and commitments to fill your day with, tripping on mushrooms can end up seeming like a pretty low priority. So microdosing is a good idea for people who want to be able to have the mind expanding and therapeutic health benefits of magic mushrooms while still being able to do the laundry.

Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms could offer a lot of potential support in the way of alleviating depression, anxiety, and helping with brain repair and cell growth, based on recent research and studies. With a microdose of magic mushrooms, you can still operate all of your basic functions of daily life. The effects can be so subtle that you may not even notice that it’s there. This “sub-perceptual” dose is just enough to experience the myriad benefits mushrooms have to offer, but not enough to have a “psychedelic” experience.

Athletes, sufferers of cluster headaches, and individuals suffering with anxiety or depression are among some of the types of people who may deduce benefit from microdosing. Dr. James Fadiman, in his book The Psychedelic Explorers Guide conducted research on a range of people using microdoses of LSD and pscilocybin mushrooms. In an interview with Tim Ferris, Fadiman is quoted as saying that microdosing is an “all-chakra enhancer, where everything’s just a little bit better… People behave better, are happier, are more tolerant; not necessarily more creative, but more in the flow,” he told Ferris.

The Healing Benefits of Psilocybin Mushrooms

Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, mushrooms have often been touted as having no medicinal value. As a Schedule 1 drug, it’s often assumed or imagined to be nothing more than your average hallucinogenic party drug. Recently however, researchers at New York University and John Hopkins conducted one of the largest set of trials for studying the therapeutic effects of psilocybin mushrooms on cancer patients. To the astonishment and surprise of many, 80% of cancer patients showed major reductions in psychological stress, anxiety, and depression for up to seven months or longer after only one magic mushroom experience. In addition to the remarkable healing benefits, no other significant side effects were documented. Meaning, there was no observable downside.

Until recently, in-depth studies on the beneficial health properties of psilocybin mushrooms have been nil. As John Hopkins and others open the door, more studies and findings are cropping up to support the evidence of the positive healing benefits of mushrooms. University of South Florida has recently conducted research which shows that mushrooms have the ability to grow new brain cells in mice, and help them overcome fearful stimuli.

“The proposition that psilocybin impacts cognition and stimulates hippocampal neurogenesis is based on extensive evidence that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) acting on specific 5-HT receptor sub-types (most likely the 5-HT2A receptor) is involved in the regulation of neurogenesis in hippocampus. The in vitro and in vivo animal data is compelling enough to explore whether psilocybin will enhance neurogenesis and result in measurable improvements in learning.” – Juan R. Sanchez-Ramos

Evidence that magic mushrooms can help alleviate severe depression is also mounting. A study funded by the Medical Research Council and published in the Lancet demonstrated that after administering mushroom to 12 patients suffering with severe depression, all twelve participants saw their depression lifted, with sustained effect for up to three months after only one dose. Regular microdosers of mushrooms are even claiming that their subperceptual rendezvous with the fungus have helped relieve cluster migraines, a painfully severe kind of headache with few known natural therapies.

Where to Obtain Magic Mushrooms for Microdosing

Depending on where you are in the world, it may be illegal for you to obtain magic mushrooms. For more information on the legality of mushrooms in your country, check out our full article.

Several vendors offer magic truffles for sale over the internet, which contain the same psychoactive ingredients as magic mushrooms but can be legal in some areas. Microdose Bros is one of these vendors – order from them with code “ENTHEO” for 10% off.

One good option may be growing your own mushrooms, which is legal in some places. Check out DoubleBlind’s mushroom growing course to help you grow mushrooms from scratch! Use code “ENTHEO” for 20% off.

How to Microdose with Magic Mushrooms

Microdosing is an art that can be hard to get right. That said, those who are experienced with psychedelics should have no problem fine-tuning the craft to obtain the results they’re looking for.

Dr. Fadiman suggests only microdosing if you have previous experience with psychedelics, and to start by doing 3/10ths of a gram of dry psilocybe mushrooms once every three days. Taking two days off between microdoses gives you a chance to really feel the benefits of the dose, and helps your body avoid becoming accustomed to frequent doses.

Since everyone’s body is going to respond and uptake the mushrooms differently, it’s important to downsize or increase the dose to your bodies preference. If things start glowing, you’re taking too much. The effect should be something to the effect of the afterglow bliss you typically feel after a regular, large dose of psychedelics. A mild influence should be felt that could lead to feeling more focused, a bit happier or less jaded, with finer acuity, quicker reaction times, or less social anxiety.

It’s recommended to microdose with a clear intention, and to approach it very seriously. Keep a journal to track the changes in your perception – this will also help you know whether you need to increase or decrease your dose. Ideally, you should be able to go about your normal life without noticing any perceptual effects; but at the end of the day you may feel as if you have been more productive, creative, or connected. Eating well, exercising, and engaging in spiritual pursuits will almost certainly help to boost the effect of your microdosing.

If you start to feel anxious or have trouble sleeping during a microdosing routine, stop for a few days and lower your dose. Never microdose for longer than a few weeks at a time, as the long-term effects of microdosing are not known.

Remember that what works for one person may not work for another, and dive into your microdosing routine as something new and exciting that you can develop to your own personal needs. Happy microdosing!

I’m a believer in the power of psychedelics. I am a actor and have been involved in theater and film for over 45 years. I’d bounce from theater to 9 to five jobs my whole life. When I was in college I got hired to play a leading role in a play. The character had dialogue for days and I had two weeks to learn my lines. It was not going smoothly along with my school work. The production was down to three day before we’d previewed. I got my hands on some chocolate Mescaline. Took it before rehearsal and destroyed that day. I could not stop laughing. Poor director, was going crazy. How on earth are we going to get thru this production, when the main actor is falling apart during the rehearsal.
Of course I felt bad about the situation and was helpless and frighten about the on coming show. I went home that night exhausted and high. I pass out without a care.
The next rehearsal something strange happened. I knew my lines. I knew that script backwards and forwards. It was like I had my own teleprompter. Photograph memories. I could remember every I and T’s, in that script. I blew the director and my fellow actors away with my my new found ability and performance. Anyway the show was a success and I was treated with accolades that was a custom to getting.
The secret was psychedelics. Saved me saved the show. I never did that again because…drug just not available like it was in college. But I’ll tell you I would consider it in a heartbeat, if ever in a situation like that again.

I’m taking extremely small doses – like a few grains — every two to three days. A 15 mg microdose was waaay too much and caused hypomania. I just open the capsules I received from a coach and take a few grains on my tongue every 2 to 3 days. But I seem to have lost some language abilities. I’m a professional proposal writer who dictates aloud and I am now constantly substituting words that sound similar but have different meanings, or else getting my word order incorrect, or sitting there stuck for words, like I have Alzheimer’s or something. It’s like my brain isn’t functioning properly. Yet I don’t feel much in the way of positive results either. No glow, no nothing. Is it just contraindicated for people who are bipolar II? I don’t know what to do because my depression is so severe yet I can’t take any prescription drugs that are designed for that and this was my last hope. I do feel stronger and braver however. I’m doing a lot more cleaning and organizing than I ever did before, so that’s a good sign. And I fearlessly stood up to a woman who’s always trying to take advantage of me by contracting me to do stuff while messing around with my hours and money and so on. Thus, I do think it’s working to that extent. Less fear but not really less depression.

Idk,if you can get these where you are but I’d try the candy bars that are professionally made,it tells you how much to micro dose on the box also tells you how many grams per square. I’m not a professional at this but I’m in the same boat, meds don’t work for me have tried all,I’ve been trying the bars also not suppose to take 15mg for micro dose maybe taking too much.Idk if its placebo effect but I do feel a bit better, good luck!

    @Rachel

I would never try anything from a capsule when searching for natural cures. You never know what type of adjuvants or any other ingredients or toxic elements are in them.
I would suggest finding someone who puts great care into the cultivation of high quality, well cared for mushrooms and measure out the doses precisely, on your own. They have small scales for around $20 at little smoke shops.
It’s a dangerous world, where people take a big-pharma style approach to natural cures because they are already approaching the process incorrectly and in the wrong spirit, making “cuts” and adding “fillers”.

Rachel – go out for a run or a long bicycle ride, turn your brain off work and any stress for extended periods, just space out and dream, take long hot baths with olive oil and your favourite essential oil and baking soda, perhaps some sea salt, the bathroom only lit by a single candle… micrososing psilocybin also makes me braver and stronger and carefree because the results of the task at hand seems less important and less pressing in THE BIG PICTURE. I’m more energetic and happy but slightly less logical and mathematical and precise. So, I write creatively on microdose days and the next day – an off day – I check and edit what I wrote on my microdose day. Relax. The universe loves you.

Grateful for this article. I read a few and this one was the most helpful. My niece is suffering from schizophrenia and it was suggested by a respectable and qualified person that micro dosing shrooms along with marijuana would be helpful to treat her severe case. The details of the severity of her situation are not needed to get into here, but I will say she hallucinates and her other personality has and will become violent. Now, obviously pharmaceuticals are not working or we wouldn’t be desperately looking for other solutions. I am all for looking for a 100% natural way to treat her. We were told micro dosing could help with the hallucinations and we are open to give it try. My niece is only 17, however. But when it comes to those we love, most of us will do just about anything if we believe it will help. I am familiar with dosing to trip on magic mushrooms but have not done so in over a decade, nor ever considered or have heard of micro dosing them. Your article was indeed helpful on how…thank you soo much. Now if I can only find some. Is there a legal way to “score” some like medicinal marijuana or do I need to start looking up old friends? Please, lmk. I really want to help the people I love. Thank you.

Hi Brian, You could easily get CBD Flower in most countries, Hemp Cannabis with high levels of CBD (cannabinol) and very low levels of THC bellow 1% makes it much easier to micro dose this compound.

After switching from Skunk to well grown seedless hemp I have fully recovered from psychosis and I’ve been able to stop anti psychotic medication such as Olanzapine which almost killed me, because mixing Skunk and Dopamine blockers caused me to develop mild schizophrenia and suicidal thoughts.

When I swapped the Skunk for High CBD / Low THC flower the voices in my head faded away quite quickly, my delusional paranoia took a few years to go away unfortunately, it just takes time with this and I still have mild anxiety today, but at least now I can relax in my own home which I was unable to do at one point. I can finally live again, I’m happier than I have ever been, I’m able to live on my own and I’m 1000% more sociable .

I really hope that your niece can find as much peace as I have, using Hemp Tea or Smoking/Vaping it if preferred, that’s what I do as I was a regular Marijuana smoker prior to suffering with these mental illnesses. I like to get all my Hemp/Cannabis Light from Switzerland as they can grow it with up to 1% THC there which seems to be a perfect level for me to get some benefit without any psychoactive effect .. I usually buy flower with above 20% CBD & its outdoor grown so cheaper but still good quality especially at Cannabis King (Switzerland)

Good luck Brian, I admire you for thinking outside the box about this.. personally it has taken me 5 years to build the strength and courage to even consider micro dosing magic mushrooms and I have a lot of experience with psychedelic drugs in the past, I think my recommendation above is your safest bet if you can both bide your time and wait for things to get better but don’t let me put you off micro dosing Magic Mushrooms because there is a chance if I had done this years ago I may of recovered much sooner..

I acquired some mushrooms from my friend for the purpose of microdosing with my sweetheart, who seems to be having some early onset cognitive difficulties. We are both in our early 50s. I have been doing very small doses, .05 g. He only took one dose, and then got scared and declined to do more right now. I, however, I’m having a pretty delightful experience. I have done a ton of personal growth work in my life (ie therapy, yoga,) but in the last five years, have suffered from economic stress, menopause and a career pivot. A lot of my healing practices went out the window. I am now unemployed due to the pandemic, and taking the opportunity to recalibrate. I am finding that a layer of worry/disassociation/attempts to control my own experience disappear or are turned way down now. I am also more in contact with my full range of emotions, including grief and sadness. My sweetheart hasn’t yet decided to do any more, but I do feel curious about psylocibin’s ability to support brain health.

Hi, thank you for an article that’s so informative. My experience is after taking a micro dose I had such a sense of relief from my anxious, high strung anxious mood. I was only able to experience this once! Unfortunately is was something I stumbled upon….so now I am looking to find a source that will help me rather then going on anti-depressants (again.) If you get the feeling (as I did) that anti-depressants are safe to treat depression/anxiety think again!!!! I mean, after all they are prescribed by doctors. When I decided that taking medication was too much to deal with the side effects and an unsympathetic doctor refused to refill my Rx I took myself off the medication. I never experienced such a hellish time in my life. I would rather die the go thru that again.
I’m suffering mightily now and would love if someone would guide me to a program or learn where I could purchase or grow this.

Hi, thanks so much for these info.
I am a mother with 2 kids. Both diagnosed with ASD. My daughter with OCD and schizophrenia and anxiety as well. She is only 14 now. She is now on many meds now, she is doing really better now, but as you will know with lots of side effects as well. My heart breaks. I did stumble upon the magic mushrooms. But I am bit cofused, I understood you cannot use it when you have psychosis or schizophrenia? She is probably also too young? Wonder if it will help for ASD as well?

    • Patrick Smith on November 10, 2021 at 1:12 pm

Hi Stephanie, it is advised to not use psychedelics if you have a diagnosis of schizophrenia or psychosis. However it’s best to check with your healthcare provider.
