How to Keep a Journal While Microdosing Ayahuasca

Bright red journal with flowers on top. Keeping a microdosing journal for ayahuasca.

The changes one experiences during an ayahuasca microdosing regimen can often be subtle, or even sub-perceptual. And yet, as the days go on, you may begin to notice some very distinct qualitative changes in your dreams, relationships, and also the quality of your thoughts. Tracking these changes and shifts through a journaling practice is one way to bring more awareness to the experience.

Journaling can also help you to process various emotions that may be coming to the surface throughout the experience. It’s a great way to formulate clear intentions that you want to anchor into your experience as you invite the wisdom of the plant into your life.

Journaling is also crucial in helping you moderate your dose, and make adjustments until you find the perfect level of microdose for you.

If you’ve never kept a journal and you’re experimenting with microdosing, now is an excellent time to start! If you’re already an avid journaler, we recommend keeping a separate journal specifically for the purpose of tracking the effects of ayahuasca microdosing.

The Benefits of Tracking Your Ayahuasca Microdosing Experience Through Journaling

If you want to have a really clear idea of how the ayahuasca vine is impacting your life, tracking your experience with a journal will help you to observe these changes over time. I recommend jotting down the time you took the vine, how many drops or ounces of tea, and then recording any changes or differences you notice in your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual state.

Since everyone’s brain chemistry is a little different, the plant is going to affect people in slightly different ways. In the same way that some people can go to sleep after having a cup of coffee, while for others it nearly gives them a panic attack; you will only know how the Caapi vine effects you after experimenting with it for a while and tracking the effects.

Does it mellow you out and help you go to sleep? Or does it give you more energy, focus, and creative clarity? Regular users of the vine report different experiences. Once you know how the vine uniquely affects you, you can tailor your protocol to suit your unique constitution and needs.

Journaling while microdosing with ayahuasca will also help you discover which dose is best for you, by allowing you to correlate every single change in mood with the number of drops you took at breakfast that morning.

Keeping a journal is an excellent tool for personal growth and development work. Bringing this practice into your life will be a great benefit, and help to highlight the changes and personal growth evolution you experience through working with the ayahuasca vine.

Keeping an Ayahuasca Microdosing Dream Journal

Depending on how you structure your microdosing experience, you may find that taking Caapi vine tincture before bed has quite an impact on your dreams! Even if you are taking the drops during the day, you’re likely to notice some changes in the unconscious hours of the eve.

Those who have experimented with microdosing with ayahuasca drops report their dreams becoming more vivid, especially in the beginning. There could be reasons for this based on the chemical structure of the plant as a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, subtly increasing levels of neurotransmitters in your brain. However, this is just speculation, as there are no conclusive studies on this.

The Awajun tribe from Peru is one indigenous tribe that works ceremoniously with only the vine.1 They are said to use the vine to “look for visions” to learn about one’s path in life. I am often able to find the “visions” that the vine is offering me in the dream time. As an example, I was journaling one night as I was preparing to take my drops, and asking the vine for insight into a problem I was having in a relationship. That night I had a very vivid dream of me placing little notes into a “gratitude jar.” I felt that the message was straightforward and clear: focus more on what you’re grateful for rather than always focusing on what’s “wrong” or what’s “missing.” I began that practice the next day and have been doing it daily ever since!

Some may find that the increase in the vividness of dreams is disturbing, as it could be more of a cleansing going on in one’s subconscious. Even if the dreams are challenging, there are likely some gems in there to help you understand yourself better.

Carl Jung said of dreams,

In each of us there is another whom we do not know. He speaks to us in dreams and tells us how differently he sees us from the way we see ourselves. When, therefore, we find ourselves in a difficult situation to which there is no solution, he can sometimes kindle a light that radically alters our attitude – the very attitude that led us into the difficult situation.”

If your dreams are more vivid than usual, and they are reflecting some unpleasant attitudes or behaviors that you want to shift in yourself, write them down and journal about what you’d like to work on. Then bring that intention to your microdosing practice.

Journaling Your Intentions

A great practice to engage in with your microdosing journey is to sit down and write a few sentences of intention before taking your drops. Your intention can also be framed as a prayer or a question. It will help you to hone in on your experience and allow you to sit with what you sincerely want out of your experience.

Even if it sounds totally “woo-woo” to you, try communicating with the plant as you would relate to a person. Indigenous peoples believe these master plant teachers have a Spirit you can commune with.

Here are some examples of intentions you might set with the vine:

“My intention is to receive more clarity about how to be fulfilled in my career.”

“My intention is to open up to receiving heart healing from a recent break-up.”

“My intention is to feel happier and more at peace throughout my days.”

Feel free to expand more on these intentions or prayers. Once you’ve journaled about your prayers or intentions, you can then try taking your drops or tea and sitting in meditation for a few minutes while focusing on your intention.

Why Journaling is Essential While Microdosing With Ayahuasca

So to summarize, keeping a microdosing journal will help you track these important aspects of ayahuasca microdosing:

  • The cognitive and physical effects of microdosing ayahuasca
  • How those effects are linked to your dosage
  • How those effects are linked to your intentions
  • How those effects change over time!

Without a journal, it would be so much harder to find your perfect dose, or discover the greatest potential benefits of the ayahuasca vine.
